Microsoft has signed an agreement to acquire MetaSwitch Networks, a network software provider, for an undisclosed amount.

“The convergence of cloud and communication networks presents a unique opportunity for Microsoft to serve operators globally via continued investment in Azure, adding additional depth to our hyperscale cloud infrastructure with the specialized software required to run virtualized communication functions, applications and networks.”
Yousef Khalidi, Corporate Vice President of Azure Networking

The acquisition of Metaswitch also built on Microsoft’s previous acquisition of Affirmed Networks. Microsoft hopes to take advantage of the high-performance, cloud-native communications software, pairing it with new 5G technology.
